“An officer … of the greatest valor:” 2d Lieutenant Lloyd Diehl Schaeffer, an Airman of the Great War

Best known for his association with the Carlyle House, Lloyd Diehl Schaeffer joined the U.S. Army in 1917, to fight in the First World War. He served with distinction as an aviation observer attached to the French Army’s Escadrille BR-66 on the Western Front, where he faced Germany's infamous “Flying Circus.”
